IN HER OWN WORDS - SABINA’S RE: WORKING STORY

Several years ago, I thought I had it made professionally-- a fantastic job, great pay, and a purpose. I was on the brink of achieving everything I had always wanted professionally. And then, in an instant, everything was gone-- no job, no money, and my career future seemed permanently stalled.

Few things make you question your worth like not being able to find a job or to afford the necessities of life.  I fell into despair and lived under a cloud of anxiety and depression. Every time I learned something new about the unemployment process, I would kick myself for making another costly mistake. It took me almost a full year to find another job and, even then, once I returned to work, I had to deal with recovering financially and emotionally from the toll a year of employment took on my life. I found it difficult to get past the shame of having been out of work and having had to navigate the unchartered waters of unemployment-- a process that cost me money, time, and pride. As I struggled to recover, I would often wonder how I could share what I learned about being unemployed with others so that they would not make the same mistakes I made.

As I struggled through my time of unemployment, I came across the parable of The Hole. A man falls into a hole and calls for help to get out. A doctor offers him a prescription, to no avail. A clergyman offers to pray for him. Both gestures are appreciated but still leave the man in the hole. Finally, a third man comes along and instead of offering help, jumps in the hole with him! The man was incredulous, asking the stranger why he did that. The stranger replies, “I have been in this hole and I to get out.” I realized I was in a hole and I needed to get myself out of it. And I did. But I also realized that although we are responsible to get ourselves out of the hole, we sometimes need help. I knew what it was like to be trapped in that hole and I wanted to help others see that they could get themselves out, just as I had done.

But how could I help others?

TWO NEW FRIENDS AND A Great IDEA

On March 17th, 2020, I was sent home from my office due to the looming COVID-19 pandemic. That same afternoon, I received an alert on LinkedIn that my new connection, Andy Storch, author, and career coach, was live with his Hot Seat podcast and had a special guest, book coach Honoree Corder. As I listened, riveted by their conversation and enthusiasm, it dawned on me-- people were already losing their jobs due to the pandemic, but outside of that, people, sadly, lose their jobs every day and I could help them. I had found my purpose. I started writing my book that night determined to capture all the things I had learned while I was out of work so that others could learn from my experience. Within the next few days, I contacted both Andy and Honoree who have since guided and encouraged me in writing my book and building my business. Through my discussions with both of them, I realized this was far more than a book— this was a calling, a business. This was something people needed.

Re: Working was born.

I now coach others through the unemployment process. . . from everything on how to file for Unemployment benefits to how to deal with the loss of no longer having a job to go to. Although a huge part of the focus of Re: Working is to get you back to work, our main purpose is to help you use this time of “not working” to become stronger, smarter, and resilient so that you return to work confident and ready for the next phase of your career journey.
